Yes, you will be getting one hour gas to cook and then there is this slurry (smell’s bad) which can be used as manure for plants. But these are just minor things.
I too installed bio gas plant at my home for the above mentioned purpose, but discovered that there is more to it.
As someone who is not very fond of cockroaches, bio gas plant comes as a boon.To make the plan work, no organic waste should go into the drain.Just a few particles during washing is fine.Clean the plates roughly with water and collect it into a dish which you can later pour into the biogas unit.
If it s a new home, then they wont get enough food to set up one huge colony and if it is an old house ,they will eventually leave your house a few months after setting up the bio gas plant.
Ofcourse there are other novel ways to get rid of cockroaches from kitchen ,but this is the most eco-friendly.You just starve them. Hehehe !
Keeping apart my obsession with cockroaches let me put down the advantages and disadvantages of having one at home.
Advantages
- The cooking gas that you get for nearly one hour if used by a family of 4 members.I use the gas to cook the rice, and good for making Appam .Basically you can’t stir fry in it , as the flame is not very hot.But for all other purpose it is fine. The slurry that you get as a by product is a good manure for plants. You will be getting one bucket every day, which needs to be diluted with double the quantity of water .It is like “chavanyaprashyam” for plants .They become healthy and get an immunity boost. They yield more and will survive pest and disease for a longer time.
-
- You can get rid of pest like rats and cockroaches .
Disadvantages
-
- The gas that comes out stove is bit smelly in the initial 3-4 months. The bio gas plant initially is partially filled with cow dung and hence the smell. But eventually the smell weans off .
-
- Should not throw in egg shells and lemon. Remember it is only for organic waste produced in kitchen and not for dumping in dry leaves. The system collapses if done so.
-
- The slurry smells horrible for 2 months since most of what comes out of it as slurry in the initial month is fresh cow dung.If you are not so familiar with fresh cow dung smell then…..
And what you are going to do with it , is bit of a question. You really need to have plants to use them. Although not an enthusiast of growing my own food or maintaining a garden,I have both because of the slurry.
Point to Ponder
Has the smell really disappeared or I just got used to it…….
