Renovation in Kollam
Not all renovation demand demolition or structural changes .I believe, that in renovations there is no such thing as a small change.A change is a change , big or small. This project is a classic example of how small changes can make a big difference.
Old is Gold
Three years back ,we worked for them in the interiors of a Villa Project in Karakulam,Trivandrum. The project was well appreciated ,got a lot of media attention and was even filmed for a malayalam movie “Thankyou”.Now we were asked to give a face lift for their twenty year old bulding in Chattanoor ,Kollam. The house was getting ready for the 60th birthday of the client.
Former clients are always a delight to work with. The reasons are obvious. All the interaction we have with them make us understand their life style so well that design phase is a smooth glide. They too know about our style of work and hence the degree of trust is higher. It is like doing a job for a near or dear one,you don’t have to ask too many questions to get the right answer. You already know what they want.
Makeover
First thing I noticed when I entered the house was the light ,or the lack of it.There were wells of light. Some areas were too bright and some too dark. The living room had a double height ceiling with a window. But the light from the window was consumed by the dark flooring in the sunken courtyard. The home lacked a dedicated TV viewing area. The present TV position made the inmates watch it from the dinning space in an awkward position.
Design Solution
The courtyard was filled up and layed with reflective glossy finish wooden tiles. The light from the window was now scattered in all directions. This solved two problems. The client got a comfortable seating arrangement to watch tv and the double height ceiling now served its true purpose. Now step from the foyer into the living room and the overall feeling is blissfully luminous.
Wander into the kitchen and the sunlit mood continues. It wasn’t always so cheery.Despite the large windows, yesterday’s space seemed devoid of light, and dark granite counter’s didn’t help. The mood was dramatically altered just by replacing the older counter top granite with a lighter shade one.The outer shelf of the cabinetry were altered to bring in a modern look and using the vitrified tiles as back splash cut down the cost.
The overall effect is one of volume and light. You open up this door ,and you feel like it is a calming breath.
